Eaten By Worms
I have been re-reading the Book of Acts in the Bible over the last several weeks – very slowly! I am trying to understand how the early church operated and what caused its rapid growth! I have unlearned some previous misconceptions and discovered some great aspects of the early church.
This morning in my devotions I read an interesting verse:
” … because Herod did not give praise to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died” (Acts 12:23).
Herod was placed in a position of power! In the middle of this public address, in the preceding verses, people begin to shout – “This is the voice of a god …”
There is a simple important lesson for pastors and leaders – give credit to where credit is due. There will be times when leaders – political or religious – are placed on the high-scale pedestal, almost god-like – we cannot allow ourselves to be put up there! We must recognize that God is the reason for any of our success or even failure!
We must give praise to God! In the middle of success and impact we must always remember that God is the source and supplier – never take credit for what God is doing. That is the first step toward you or I becoming dinner for the worms!
