Day 32: How Humility Handles our Tendency to Compare

0310283671READING:  pages 271-276

Have you ever fallen into the trap of comparison?  I know that I have.  You can walk into a room and compare clothes, charisma and character by simply watching.  And we tend to compare with ourselves.  There’s only one problem – we are not the standard!

Who is the standard?  Jesus, of course.  All of our efforts and energies will simply fall short of that standard, so we compare ourselves with others.  This (I think) helps us feel better about us!  Yet it still does not make it a great standard!

What causes us to compare?

* Competition – we see everyone as the opposing team or the coach we are trying to please.
* Culture – we are trying to keep up and even pass those around us.
* Character – we are insecure with our character base so we compare to others.

The real issue is not whether we compare ourselves to someone, but it is simply “Who do we compare ourselves to?”  Jesus is the standard.  We should compare ourselves to him … this should humble all of us all by itself!

VERSE:  “… When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise” (2 Cor. 10:12).

QUESTION:  Who do compare yourself with?  Why?
