Sometimes we just need to get a pray-a-way … a place to recharge and refocus.
Do you remember the Calgon commercial from the early 80’s … A mother is going through a stressful day … work needs to get done … kids are going crazy … and the mother says, “Calgon, take me away.” Instantly she is teleported to a bubble bath which says, “Only Calgon takes you to this world that makes you silky all over.” Yadda yadd yadda. Prayer is the same. Well, it may not make us silky all over. But it helps us to adjust our lives a little bit.
Jesus got away to a private place to recharge … refocus … and recalibrate! If Jesus, Son of God, co-creator of the universe, needed to refocus, how much more do we need that! This moment in Jesus’ life helped him find focus again. I am not suggesting He did not know what He was doing … but Mark 1:36-39 shares something.
Here listen: “36Simon and his companions went to look for him, 37and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” 38Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” 39 So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.”
In prayer, Jesus was able to determine his next steps. That’s a lesson for all of us … when we don’t know what to do we should pray … when we need to make a decision we should pray … when we are wondering if this is the person I am to marry we should pray … when we need to know if we should take that job we should pray …
WHY? Because prayer recalibrates our focus.
