Over the 21 years of leading I have faced my share of opposition, negative people and anti-me rhetoric. It is seldom fun to face haters – but it is part of the job. Its the part of leadership that no-one enjoys – but everyone endures. But with every opposing comment, thoughts or action there are some practical things you can do in the process.
Is there any truth in the comments or criticism? That’s a question all of us need to ask as we face opposition. Sometimes criticism is spot on. Don’t just ignore the critics – analyze their comments.
REJECT NEGATIVE ONLY PEOPLE.
I have this expression I have said for many years: “I will never receive criticism from someone who does not compliment me.” If someone is constantly negative – do not let them in your inner circle. Surround yourself with life-giving people.
IF GOD SPOKE IT – DON’T LET PEOPLE CHOKE IT.
You have to be fully convinced that the direction you are heading in is the right one. If you have resolved in your heart you are heading where and how God wants you to go – then don’t allow the opposition to change your direction.
OPPOSITION ONLY COMES TO THOSE WITH A POSITION.
If you are not being criticized chances are you are not doing anything worthwhile. Criticism comes to the successful. And when opposition comes remember they are typical attacking a position but not a person. That means don’t take it personal.
FOCUS ON YOUR CALLING – NOT ON THEIR CRITICISM.The enemy loves to use people, things or circumstances to discourage us. Stay focused on your calling. Don’t let any criticism take root in your heart and mind. God does not call the qualified – he qualifies the called. Focus on that.
You see, opposition reveals your character. Don’t let any negative person get you off track. Criticism is part of leadership. It will test you. Don’t let it break you – let it build you.
