Netflix just launched the trailer for The Monkey King, a kids animated film that has generated a lot of buzz around the storyline and the silly, self-centered monkey it follows.

According to Deadline, the film was directed by Anthony Stacchi of The Boxtrolls and Open Season fame, while its animation was created by ReelFX.
Taking place in ancient China, “in a time of ancient gods and demons,” the self-proclaimed “bravest, most epic, most spectacul-errific-amazing-derful” Monkey King sets out to defeat 100 demons in order to prove himself.
What is The Monkey King about?
The Netflix description for the film is follows: “A stick-wielding monkey teams with a young girl on an epic quest for immortality, battling demons, dragons, gods — and his own ego — along the way.”
With his trusty sidekick (or should I say, sidestick) appropriately named Stick and the help of Lin, a girl impressed by his confidence who “want[s] to do big things someday like [him],” as his “humble assistant,” Monkey King strives to defeat the Dragon King.

While seemingly silly and fun-loving, the film is rooted deep in Chinese literary history. The titular character, the “Monkey King,” was originally created in the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West, per Mashable. As noted by Netflix’s Tudum, the book was written during the Ming Dynasty, and is attributed to Wu Cheng’en, a novelist and politician.
The Monkey King cast: Who stars in The Monkey King?
The film’s protagonist is voiced by Crazy Rich Asians and Love Hard‘s Jimmy O. Yang. Bowen Yang, who made history by becoming the first Chinese-American cast member on Saturday Night Live, is the voice behind the Dragon King, Monkey King’s nemesis. Stick is voiced by Nan Li, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport is the voice of Lin, and Red Girl is voiced by Sophie Wu. The cast also features BD Wong (Law & Order: SVU) , Stephanie Hsu (Joy Ride), Jodie Lin, James Sie, Andrew Kishino, and more.
